Our History

St. Clare Catholic Church has a rich history rooted in faith and community. Established in the 1830s as a log church near what is now St. Elmo, the parish overcame challenges, including fires in 1848 and 1873, to emerge as a cornerstone of the Altamont community. With its first frame building completed in 1875 and a new Gothic-style church dedicated in 1923, St. Clare has continually grown and adapted to meet the needs of its parishioners. Supported by the Franciscan Monks of Teutopolis in its early years, the parish expanded to include a school in 1882. Today, St. Clare serves over 150 families, continuing its legacy of worship, education, and community connection.
